Wow... I had no idea there were so many versions...! How old are these books anyway?

The book was written in 1959...and it still holds up today. I think it was 1988 that an anime version was made, and then in 1997 Paul Verhoeven released his travesty (I'm sorry, fans, that's my VHO, to each his own though) and two sequels followed. The film spurred a children's CGI show, part book, part film, and the film also spurred on some comic series, etc.

Yeah. It's kind of a mess. ;-P

I for one think the movie is better than the book. The book is too pro-militarism and anti-democratic for my tastes, while the movie makes fun of this. The book might have revolutionized the concept of power armor, but that doesn't mean it isn't a minor work of evil.

Yay for pro-militarism! spear.gif

Hey, we have no rules about this, however I just wish to say that I think one of the reasons we've always been able to keep up such a good mood here is that while not shying away from complicated discussions of politics, ethics, religion or what-not, we try to avoid flaunting blatant, non-constructive statements such as these. If you'd find a discussion of the merits of killing people for whatever reason interesting, please do open a topic in the Wolfpack Inn about it and we'll probably all have an interesting talk in good humour even if not agreeing. Unbacked heavily opiniated one-liners in mildly related topics serve little more than to irritate those who don't agree though.

I was kidding. wink.gif No offence. smile.gif I am NOT really pro-militarism.

I'm pro-LEGO! horn.gif

Yes; IMVHO the book is far better, but as you can see others disagree. biggrin.gif The film was supposed to be like cheese really...I just feel Verhoeven missed the whole meaning and all.

The 2nd film was supposed to be lame, and the 3rd (yes there was a third) was supposed to be a little more like the book but it also was straight to DVD.

There was a kid's CGI show, too, but it also had Verhoeven's stain...I need to get my hands on the old pre-Verhoeven anime adaptation. Whoo!
Quill Master Posted on May 4 2010, 10:15 AM
The movie was classic for their satire... pure cheese, but lovely. orcdeb.gif

Although I heard they made a part 2 that was terrible.

Anywho, I didn't know there was a book too...!
Dr. Paleo Ph.D. Posted on May 2 2010, 10:17 PM
Well, to be fair first off you can read my review on my blog (but I think you all know I'm quite religious and also political so be forewarned) but I really loved the book.

So, no offense here, but lemme go on: I don't think it's so much fascist or whatever rather than a military book. It didn't feel too militaristic; rather, I felt it was more about the military. Not that I support all that was in the book, not at all, but I still thought it was an amazing book on military philosophy, etc.

The Ork: I felt the book was much better, yes.

Maedhros: Yeah...the movie, IMO, was rather odd.

Hordesman, did you read it? I'm interested to talk some more about it, if you're cool with that. wink.gif unsure.gif
