Description: A book by Margaret Atwood

Hey guys,
Has anyone here read the book "Oryx and Crake" by Margaret Atwood? I find the author's story and writing style very inspiring. It also helps that this is a book I'm studying in school, but I am intrested in hearing if any of you have read it as well.
The book asks you serious questions about the future of the human race -very intreguing and scary at the same time. It's defintly a good book...though -maybe a little strange.
Your thoughts?

Oh, I've read it as well, one of my favourites!
(and in fact I wrote an essay about it for school ;))
I found it very interesting and inspiring. They way she had written it with the two storylines was what inspired the story for my own novel. And her language was good as well, not at all romanticised, everything was dead on brutal and disgusting.
And of course, it is quite an unsettling book, because that's the kind of dystopia that's not too far off...

Yes, the alternating perspectives was very refreshing, and it presented the reader with the feeling of mystery and suspense, as you want to piece together Snowman's past. Very thought invoking, I have highly enjoyed the 200 pages that I have read so far -I can't wait to find out how Crake caused the eradication of the human race -but somehow Snowman survives -I wonder how can that be.

That's the scary part, secret organizations around the world are probably already conducting expriements like the ones in Oryx and Crake.

It would seem as though we will let him survive for it. :D
I've never read this book... what is the main premise?

SPOILER ALERT!
Basically the world has gone a lot more high tech, especially when it comes to genetic engineering. The rich people live in secluded communities while the hordes of poor people live in misery outside. A lot of different breeds of cattle and the like have been "made" using the genetic technology. Meanwhile our little antihero Crake who is a total genius goes further than anyone and "founds" a new human race, that knows no pain and that's physically superior to normal humans in most ways. Then he sets in motion a holocaust of sorts for the "old humans" and.... well... you get the idea ;)

Agreed~ I was going to post something along the lines of Brave New World meets Adolf.
Sounds like a kind of interesting novel - I haven't been reading anything even remotely related to sci-fi (or fiction! :() lately - but why do I have a feeling this has a not so happy ending?

I have to admit the ending sucked. But I'm pretty sure I know what happened.

I'm obviously too much of an idiot to understand the ending...
But I assumed Snowman killed the humans to continue on Crake's orders, and not let the "evil" huan race resurface. I wish the ending explained that but, I suppose inyour opinion it was a great ending...making you think and all. Knowing me, my thoughts were wrong, oh well...what's new.

Seriously, it sounds like a pretty cool book - especially after reading that last part about the snowmen killing and what-not... is it a real snowman?

Well, I wouldn't say that Snowman killed them... there was nothing he could do about it rather (if I got it right of course.. maybe I'm the idiot.. ;))
Oh, and, Quilly, for the record the Snowman is a human ;)
Graynar - October 13, 2007 07:21 PM (GMT)
Well Crake was trying to end the human race for good and replace them with the Crakers. So I think Snowman (the Craker caretaker) would follow Crake's dream and help end the human race.
But I doubt Snowman survived the attack, after all his foot was injured and the 3 humans had 2 sprayguns to his one.

I am officially lost B)
But the book does sound engaging and somewhat deep, so I may someday pick it up for a read. Of course, I have yet to read that pesky Simal- Sim- Simallir- oh, that other Tolkien book. :P
