Title: Weight Reduction
bryan163 - March 10, 2010 03:12 AM (GMT)
I started doing doing some of the weight reduction I was planning for this year.

Carbon fiber hood

removed rear bumper support

removed spare tire well and replaced trunk floor with aluminum
(note: spare tire well was a rotted pile of crap)

finished trunk
More to come soon :)

hey brian im curious as to how much weight this reduced? is there any noticeable difference?

The car does feel more nimble now. The weight reductions shown in this thread saved maybe 50lbs, but I also removed the AC compressor, condensor, and lines (another 20lbs) and shaved 25lbs by using an AGM battery. The difference in performance would be similar to how it feels to race with a full tank of fuel vs. an empty tank.

How heavy was just the spare tire hole?

I didn't weigh it, but there wasn't much left to mine because so much of it was either rusted away to nothing or paper thin. when I bought the car the spare was floating back there. I'd say I saved about 10lbs. Part of the savings is the removal of the board that goes over the tire, which is no longer needed.
This was a mod I was forced to do because the trunk was falling through. There are definitely a lot of other ways to save weight before going to this extreme.

Here's the ultimate in weight reduction:

Motor and tranny delete. Also deleted hood, doors, and fenders.

I also installed this custom built in toilet in the seat.

Tried it out and it works like a champ.

Actually this was my parts car that I'm finally getting rid of to make some room in my garage. My friend Rich was helping me move it and we couldn't resist vandalizing it a little before it gets scrapped. The turd was simulated using mud from my yard. What rich didn't know when he made it is that it probably contains actual turd from the overflowing septic :D
