There are no heroes. There are no villains. You will have to choose...to build the shackles of the government, or to prevent the chains of tyranny from ever forming. There was a time when the lines were clearly drawn, but now the chains of reality have been broken.

till the end...

There was a silence that came about after war, and this was none more true than it was for Steve Rogers and the men that he fought with during his many wars. Truth be told, Rogers hated that silence. That silence brought back memories of the past that he would willingly forget if he could. He wouldn't forget the men he fought beside on the battlefield though. He couldn't.

That's what brought him to Arlington National Cemetery. Since he return from ice, he had come here to say his goodbyes to some of the men he had fought with in World War II and even more men he had fought with even more recently. He hated that some of those men were young, he had watched too many young men give their lives in the line of service. That's why he carried on being "Captain" though, because he believed their efforts were not given in vein.

"Rest easy, boys.... you gave a hell of a fight..."

Giving the grave stone a salute he turned around and stuffed his hands in the pockets of his jacket. There was a deeper pain to visiting this place, but if anything is provided him with some kind of closure. He believed in what they were fighting for, the right freedom. This is what kept him going even as the world became more complicated. Issues and relations before mutants and human and superhumans had indeed made the world more complicated and it was hard to deal with Rogers past in the issue, so most of the time he kept to himself.

As he approached his bike at the top of the hill, he noticed something different. More over, he sensed something different. His eyes circled and scanned and it didn't take long to find the sight of his old pal Bucky, known as James Barnes, standing on small building above him. Steve let out a great sigh, unsure of what his intentions could be in this place as Rogers approached him from the ground.

"I know it isn't always that easy to spot you, so I'm guessing you wanted me to find you... I know who you are, Bucky... but do you remember me?"

With everything that had gone on, Steve was unsure where he and Bucky stood. Once boyhood friends, they had fought together in the past side by side until he was taken in, brainwashed, and trained as a killing machine. Lately, Steve had read and heard what style of life James had turned too, and Steve was unsure of how to react. As he approached below Bucky, he awaited to see what kind of response he'd receive from his former friend.

TBC by James Barnes...

Since James had been released from his brainwashing he had been finding ways to redeem himself, but not in the light Rogers would probably be proud of.

Sadly, it was the only way he knew how... the only way he cared to remember. Although he wasn't under someone's control anymore he still carried a cold confidence, a demeanor that showed he didn't care what others thought of him, but he was allowed to feel emotions again and remember those days serving under Captain America, once his best friend, his mentor... his brother.

James had actually been afraid to show himself to Rogers, but he knew enough was enough. They had to see each other, especially after everything that had happened between them.

Besides, a part of him believed he had to explain his actions to his once good friend. If there was one person he still respected, it was Rogers. He let his presence be known to him and when he approached him, James answered. "Yes... I remember you."

till the end...

A breath of relief came through Rogers as he looked at the approaching James Barnes. He looked so different then how Rogers remembered him. In fact, his entire aura was different... colder. James was colder than Steve remembers, and he seems to get colder and colder with every meeting between the two.

"What are you doing here?"

He wasn't sure what James' intentions were, if they were still to seek some kind of revenge against him or if this was going to be a peaceful exchange. While Rogers sensed this would simply be a talking session between the two, he had also learned to keep his guard up. Rogers watched closely as the two finally met closer.

"People tell me you've been quite busy... they just haven't told me exactly what you've been doing to keep busy..."

Steve hadn't kept much of a tab or eye on the whereabouts of his former friend and partner. Part of him couldn't, he knew whatever James was looking for he had to find on his own. From the stories he had heard, James was finding that something through much different ways than what Cap would do. Was that for discussion today, though? Or was this meeting simply building a bridge between the two?

"It's good to finally see you again, Bucky...

Did James even still respond to the name Bucky? Or had he moved on from that? There was a lot of unknowns surrounding the man that stood before him, and Cap just wanted to get a hand shake out of him. Rogers extended his hand and awaited to see if his former friend would take it.

James approached Rogers as he answered, "I'm here because I respect you." his words were sincere, but everything he said came off as cold.

"People tell me you've been quite busy... they just haven't told me exactly what you've been doing to keep busy..."

"I'm trying... to redeem myself. In the only way I know how."

James truly wanted redemption. He had done such terrible things. There were days when he thought there was no possible way he could find redemption or if he even deserved it, but it wasn't going to stop him from trying.

"It's good to finally see you again, Bucky...

Rogers still thought of him as Bucky. Even after everything that had happened between them, after everything he had done to the man. He looked at the hand Rogers offered him, but he didn't take it. "I'm not the man you once knew, Rogers. As much as I'd like to be... I can't."

till the end...

"You're always going to be that man to me."

Everything about Bucky had changed, his appearance, his tone of voice, his personality. Yet Steve still believed that deep down there were shreds of his old friend inside of him. He knew he had to at least attempt to bring those out even if it wasn't today. Rogers surveyed the man in front of him, James' hair fell over his face, that cold steel arm of his at his side. Bucky wasn't the monster that James thought he was, or at least that's what Steve believed.

"You're better than the person you believe yourself to be, Barnes. I know this. Whatever happened to the guy who kept pulling me out of fights back in the Bronx?"

He knew exactly what had happened to that guy. Years of brainwashing and being frozen had warped and manipulated James. Steve had told himself he wasn't going to bring any of this up, but how could he not. Bucky was his best friend and he was watching suffer, even after breaking free of the mental chains that bound him.

The hope Rogers had for him was not unexpected, but James believed it was useless. He was a different man and nothing could change that.

"Things have changed, Rogers. I have changed."

"You're better than the person you believe yourself to be, Barnes. I know this. Whatever happened to the guy who kept pulling me out of fights back in the Bronx?"

James had wished he had forgotten those sorts of memories. Being sentimental was a weakness. He didn't want to feel weak. "That man is dead. Besides, you can fight your own battles now, Rogers."

till the end...

"And so you act as judge, jury, and exocutioner for everyone on this list of yours? And then what Bucky, what happens when you finally kill everyone you want?"

What Steve had promised himself he wasn't going to do, he was now doing. Perhaps the fight to bring James back to his former self wasn't worth the battle to some, perhaps he was wasting his time. But to Steve, bringing Bucky back was his main goal. The tension between the two grew as Steve shook his head. He wasn't disappointed in the man that stood before him, more concerned with what was going on in James' head than feeling disappointment towards him.

"You could have so much more in this world if you would realize that redemption doesn't come by killing those who you think should be killed."

Perhaps James did have things in his past that he needed to seek redemption from, and perhaps the best way in James' mind was the scratch them off some list. For Steve though, he couldn't imagine living that kind of life and it pained him that Bucky had chosen to live that way.

"When you wipe away the blood from your hands... there's only going to be more blood..."

It was a poignant metaphor and this entire thing has left him a bit exhausted. He didn't want to argue or fight with Bucky anymore, even if that meant turning a blind eye to whatever he was doing. Steve released a bit of an exhausted sigh as his eyes traveled to the ground, indicating that he admitted there wasn't much of a chance to change Bucky's ways.

James didn't know how to answer Steve's question so he stayed silent. He didn't even want to try and answer that question. He saw the look of disappointment on his former friends face and it... bothered him. He had gotten too use to feeling nothing while he was brainwashed because certain emotions like betrayal and disappointment was exhausting and frustrating.

"When you wipe away the blood from your hands... there's only going to be more blood..."

"I know... but at least that blood on my hands will be my choice." James sighed, but not in disappointment in Rogers, but for another reason, "I'm not like you, Rogers. I never was and I never will be."
