CHAPTER ONE:
THE S E R P E N T AND THE RAINBOW
"Nam Sibyllam quidem Cumis ego ipse oculis meis vidi
in ampulla pendere, et cum illi pueri dicerent: Σιβυλλα
τι θελεις; respondebat illa: αποθανειν θελω."
I have seen with my own eyes the Sibyl hanging in a jar,
and when the boys asked her 'What do you want?'
She answered, 'I want to die.'
Summer surprised us, coming over the Starnbergersee
With a shower of rain; we stopped in the colonnade,
And went on in sunlight, into the Hofgarten,
And drank coffee, and talked for an hour.
Bin gar kine Russin, stamm' aus Litauen, echt deutsch.
And when we were children, staying at the archduke's,
My cousin's, he took me out on a sled,
And I was frightened. He said, Marie,
Marie, hold on tight. And down we went.
In the mountains, there you feel free.
I read, much of the night, and go south in the winter.
What are the roots that clutch, what branches grow
Out of this stony rubbish? Son of man,
You cannot say, or guess, for you know only
A heap of broken images, where the sun beats,
And the dead tree gives no shelter, the cricket no relief,
And the dry stone no sound of water. Only
There is shadow under this red rock,
(Come in under the shadow of this red rock),
And I will show you something different from either
Your shadow at morning striding behind you
Or your shadow at evening rising to meet you;
I will show you fear in a handful of dust.
~ T.S. Eliot
The Blackwell men have traveled the globe, one in search of knowledge and the other, his son, often seeking adventure. The last place either of them might have expected to find both was on the grounds of a prestigious old school in California. As luck would have it, young Blackwell and his friends happen upon a secret passage that leads them down what appears to be nothing more than the forgotten passage once used by maids and masters to more easily navigate the former chateau. What they find instead both intrigues and chills them.
Several days later, unable to put what he saw to rest, young Blackwell decides to venture once again into the darkness. This just as his father continues his own secret practices within the apartment he keeps on campus with a handful of other teachers. The results of their co-mingled magics begin to be felt on campus and in town the following day.
As September stretches it's long legs and Indian Summer gives way to Autumn celebrations evolve from the intimate gatherings at the beach to more public, glamorous affairs. The Lambert family has long since been known for their charity. Though they may not have always called Hart home, they have embraced the community as if it were there own. Typically, the Lamberts hold a widely successful gala this time each year is no exception. Not to be outdone, this year's festivities prove to be even more entertaining than the last.
Regarding this specific chapter, the first few threads will be rather intimate, like those family centered gatherings so prominent in early July. However, as the events unfold more and more characters will be pulled into the mix, culminating in a board wide experience that you'll be hard pressed to find a reason not to include your characters!
Expect to see several board NPCs awaken during this time, often when and where you least expect them.
