OK, so you want to get your next champion at agility, obedience or even flyball: would you consider a rescue and then go and search out the right dog or bitch?

Of course I would, there are plenty of dogs out there with the right attitude and character to go far in competitions.

I think my method would be to think long and hard about exactly what characteristics I wanted and prioritise them and then get in touch with rescues to see what they had and keep my contact details for future.

At the moment no. I do my bit for animal welfare by making sure my dogs get the best life and ensuring none of them are neglected or abandoned.

I have not contributed to the abuse or abandonment of dogs and don't see this are relevant to the descisions I make when I choose a dog. If anyting by giving thoughtless people the option to take a puppy, neglect their needs and then throw them away 'believing' someone 'nice' will come and give the dog a good home so they can go and but a new puppy isn't constructive. i can't really see aay to solve this issue. I'd rather lock these people up and throw away the key. I think if the owners were told the dog was very distressed and no one wanted it and it had to be pts then I would consider taking a rescue. I might be mean but I just can't do with these people. It is too easy to buy a dog, to buy the wrong breed, to buy a dog at the wrong time, to neglect training/socialisation and then to give up on their dogs.

I might well take on a loved dog though who had been given the very best in life but sadly through ill health or death the owner could no longer be there for their dog. Even if they had no hope of being any good at agility! lol.

But on the whole sorry - I know it's the unpopular thing to say- but no. All my dogs are from breeders who would take them back and re-home if needed, and I have people to take them if the breeders gave their consent. But I am deeply impressed and amazed by those who do involve themselves in rescue.
