Title: First class

Sabreig - March 16, 2010 09:41 AM (GMT)
I'm off to our first class with Flekk tonight, really looking forward to it, bit nervous because it's my first time at this club, first time with Flekk and the first time I've been in a few years. Any tips, and what do you guys take. I'll obviously take treats, his clicker and lead(s) anything else? It's an intermediate class, although knowing my luck Flekk with decide to play dumb and pretend he doesn't even know how to sit nailbiting

I'm sure it will all be fine :)

Take toys, treats what ever motivates him :) remember things like shit bags, even if hes not likely to shit quite a lot of clubs like to see you have them. A nice soft easy to use lead.

Let us know how you both get on :)

I've always got nappy bags in the car so even if my terrible memory forgets proper dog bags I always have nappy ones in the car ;) thanks for reminding me, I'd have probably forgotten, I'm bound to forget something.

I've got slip/gundog leads but I've also got Flekk's training lead, the sort with a 'D ring on the handle so you can have it at different lengths. Shall I take both or should Flekk's training lead be ok?

BorderCollieLvr - March 16, 2010 10:08 AM (GMT)
I'd take both see which you get on with better when you are there :)

Good luck, im sure you will have a great time :D

I think you have everything covered that you will need.

All I shall say is I hope you both enjoy yourselfs!!

Thanks guys, I'll probably get there, have a wonderful time and breathe a sigh of relief but at the moment I keep imagining it going badly. I should feel more confident in Flekk's training but keep thinking his nervous side may come out in a new situation with lots of other people and dogs about. I expect that he'll be fine though. We met a few dogs for a change while we were out the other day and he didn't take any notice, other than hiding his toy behind a bench incase one of them tried to take it rolleyes* Least he has his priorities straight.

I take a little pouch thingy to hold treats in, and I have a wrist strap thingy attached to the clicker so it stays on my wrist - I am so clumsy that if I didnt do this I would end up dropping everything!

Then I bring a favourite toy (but remember that most classes say nothing squeaky that might distract others in the class).

My class specifically asked us to use a flat collar and clip on lead...so dont know what your place is like? Maybe like hannah said take both and then you can decide which you are most comfortable with.

Oh and most importantly, don't forget Flekk!!!! :) And remember to relax and have fun!

BorderCollieLvr - March 16, 2010 10:24 AM (GMT)
Yes i agree don't forget Flekk lol!

Even if hes a little bit unsure on his first night i'm sure by next week when its all familiar he will be happy and confident :)

Have a great time, and make sure the treats are really high value waggingd

Sabreig - March 16, 2010 05:21 PM (GMT)
Thanks guys for all the encouragment and tips. One problem though - I've just come back from shopping (out for about 3/4 hour) to a doorway filled with explosive diarrheoa. Today of all days! He's never had it before. I phoned up and the instructor agreed that I should wait until next week. I really dont know what he's eaten to have got a runny bum.

Thanks for the reminder of the bag for treats Maggie46, I didn't put it in the car, will do that now for next week. I'm the same with clickers, always dropping them so put an elastic on it :)

WarFlyball - March 16, 2010 05:37 PM (GMT)
Poor lad, hope he's feeling better soon

BorderCollieLvr - March 16, 2010 07:55 PM (GMT)
Such a shame :( At least your doing the right thing and not taking him, hope hes all better soon :)

maggie46 - March 16, 2010 07:57 PM (GMT)
Oh no, poor Flekk! Hope he feels better soon! :(

s.padam - March 16, 2010 08:01 PM (GMT)
Poor Flekk, maybe he picked up on your nurves. As well as all the things mentioned above, I also take a mat/bed for him to lie on. Good for send aways etc. A Target stick is a good idea too!

Good luck!
