Snow has arrived in force. Tela finally finished the shelving she was doing. She had to be careful, of course. Several times, she had shelved something out of reach of the smaller humans, especially the apprentices.

These Pernese started their children in trades fairly young, despite lacking the rigid caste system of the Drebai. Match was peering down on her from a gap on the top shelf, pretending he was a medical supply himself.

She couldn't help but quirk her lips into a Drebai smile. He was the only one of her entourage in the infirmary right now. Aleroth was curled up outside the dragon infirmary and Kelin was flopped on a warm stone nearby.

Dragons and felines. They were, she had noted, remarkably similar. And quite, quite interesting to have around. Not that they made up for her exile, but they certainly caused it to be considerably more bearable.

"This isn't so bad," she mused.

Of course, she was Se, and intelligent, and better able to adjust than most of the lower castes. Fortunately, few of them had as yet awakened.

They would have to find work for them, but fortunately, Pern needed miners and laborers...and extra muscle.

"This isn't so bad." It was a statement made, without any context at all. Without context, it was meaningless. A lot of things were meaningless, but that was not at all the point.

Wiruun was as stealthy as a shadow and quite lethal while he was at it. With his glowing Drebai eyes, no one could even tell where he was looking at any given moment, which only added to his stoic creepy-ness. For he was Kirn Shatai, and still quite intact. Unlike Ruula. His features were always schooled completely and perfectly flat.

Even odder, he wasn't built like most male Drebai were. Much slighter, he struck a medium between the female build and the male. Instead of massive rolling heaps of raw muscle, he was all lithe, limber, and so frighteningly fast.

He had a knack for appearing almost suddenly, and disappearing just as quickly. This time he appeared, though all he'd really done was step around a corner to investigate the apparently base-less comment.

"Compared to?" He inquired with only just the barest hint of tone that actually made the words into a question. Coming to a halt there in the middle of the floor, he just watched with maddening calculationistic attention to detail as he waited for some sort of logical answer from Tela.

It had not at all escaped his notice how bizarrely Ruula was acting, and what it meant. What mystified him was why the Se had not taken care of that yet. Was it because there weren't enough of them?

"Compared to some of the possibilities. At least this world has friendly natives...Match, don't even think about it."

The blue was launching himself off the shelf to investigate the Kirn, and although Tela was sure he had been told not to swat firelizards, instinct and reflex could easily take over.

The blue seemed to skid to a halt in mid air and then landed on Tela's shoulder.

"Although I admit it would be nice to have a little bit more technology around here. Sooner or later what we brought with us will be gone."

Had he voiced a question about the other Kirn, the Se would not have known how to answer. Should she take care of Ruula? Yes. But she was hoping that Ruula's mindmate would handle the situation. And so far, it seemed to be, oddly enough, working.

Wiruun's gaze flicked toward the small flying creature, fixing it with that flat stare that would have made most creatures wet themselves in terror. It didn't come near him though, instead turning back to land upon Tela's shoulder. "Friendly." He repeated simply.

Friend ... was not a concept Kirn were familiar with. There were only enemies and those to be defended. None were friends. For the moment Tela and her ilk were the ones to be defended. Apparently. There hadn't been any clear orders handed down pretty much since he'd emerged from the pod. The things that SI Jurecka had said had been vague at best. As respected a rank as the SI held, it was still no substitute for clear and concise chain of command ... and the Captian hadn't given a clear order since the crash. Or at least so Wiruun had gathered.

While 'friend' was not something Kirn quite understood, he did know the dictionary definition of it. Something quite unusual in most Kirn, Wiruun actually understood a lot more than he let onto, even if he never actually expressed or felt the concepts themselves. Which was a second reason why he'd repeated the word of choice...

Some of the natives had not at all been friendly at all.

"I recall being told that most everything technological that had been possessed aboard the vessel was roasted to a crisp." Wiruun stated. This was a simple fact. Why was she ... mourning? Wistful? He wasn't sure what the right word for the right abstract emotion was, exactly. "What type of technological ability is it you are seeking?" He was fairly convinced it wasn't medical equipment she was referring to. Not a Se. While they could certainly make use of medical technology, they didn't really need it, so long as their Light held out.

"Most was, but we managed to salvage a few things. I assume you've been warned about Thread? And I was thinking...would be nice to have personal shields, for one thing."

For that same thing. Thread. But they had not really had that military grade technology with them. "Oh, and a proper autoclave." Light or no light, sometimes surgery was required and really, keeping a sterile environment was proving very tough under Pernese limitations. "The natives really do quite remarkably medically given they have little technology and no Light," she mused.

"They know a lot about plants and drugs and toxins...and there's actually a local plant that makes a good topical anesthetic with almost no preparation."

Numbweed was a treasure the rarity of which only a healer could truly appreciate.

Wiruun nodded almost imperceptibly. "I have been so informed of this occurrence. I fail to see what pertinence it has to the subject." Thread was, so he was told, an organism. He had also been told that this phenomenon was why Vor had gone down ... interestingly enough on a habitable world and not on a random lump of volcanic rock.

Personal shields... he found it odd that a Se Shatai was wishing for something as traditionally war-like as a shield. Furthermore, that kind of technology wasn't actually Drebai-originated. He knew that some species played with the idea. The only ones he'd run into that actually had a useable version that could still be functioned with while it was on were the ones that the Narjur carried... and he still wasn't entirely sure how they worked. He'd never obtained the option to fool with one, and had never asked a Narjur about them either. He suspected that like most people, if it was outside their range of specialty, they had no more idea how something worked than the next alien over.

"It seems rather obvious that wishful thinking won't net you what you desire." And as such, it was only logical that it was a waste of perfectly good energy. Why people persisted in this concept ... he would never know. But maybe pointing it out would get her back on to more productive lines.

But maybe he was starting to see the point behind her original comment about maybe it wasn't as bad as it could be... given the things she was wishing for, and her comments on how well they were managing. Indeed.

"Can you function with the concessions you possess, or not?" Wiruun asked point-blank.

"I can. Why do you think..." The Drebai equivalent of a smile crosse d her features. "...I said it could be worse. Match!"

The blue had decided to try and investigate the Kirn Shatai's shoulder. "Please don't mind him. He is a friendly creature," she noted. If awfully small next to the larger male drebai.

The fact that he was the exact same shade of blue as Tela's own skin might or might not go unnoticed. True Kirn, it was unlikely Wiruun would bother with such nuances as irony.

Match peered at the Kirn some more. But he was used to Drebai around as well as humans, and he rather liked *his* Drebai. She was nice. And she fed him.

Wiruun was still considering her answer when he was assaulted by the miniature dragon creature. At first his gaze flared dangerously, the air around his head starting to sparkle and fire off as he reached for his own source. He'd seen them around often enough to know they could snap away faster than even he could reach to grab. So naturally the weapon of choice would not be a deflecting hand, but instead his rather lethally trained Light.

Luckily, Tela got her statement out in time and Wiruun only simmered instead of smiting the creature to ash. So instead he just watched it in a rather frightening silence that weighed heavily on the air around him. Curiosity was not something that Kirn felt. But it could easily be mistaken by others that he might be experiencing it. Truth was that he was just waiting to see what it did next, with no real actual anticipation.

"What is the purpose of entertaining this creature? Is it beneficial?" Wiruun asked finally.

"Match? Somewhat. He can carry notes and other light objects and, like all of the dragon-like creatures here, he can teleport."

The blue, perhaps realizing that he was in potential danger from the Kirn, demonstrated that by flicking between, reappearing perched on a high shelf, from which he looked down at the two Drebai.

"That's mostly what his kind are kept around for...as messengers and, of course, as companions."

The reason for his name would be obvious to anyone with color vision...the blue's hide was the perfect match for his owner's skin.

"*I* think they are rather cute." But she was Se, and not just allowed to find things cute but, indeed, actively encouraged to do so, for all the ruthlessness that lay at her heart. Kirn, of course, should not show such weakness.

"I see." Wiruun answered, his gaze flicking from where Match had been to where he was now perched much higher up. Not that the extra distance would have helped him any at all in avoiding the Kirn's assault. But it did signify fairly well to even the Kirn that the creature was not looking for a confrontation. This was enough to pacify the Lander that was more or less bred for exactly that.

"A talent of that type could be considered useful under certain circumstances." He conceded, which was as close to praise as anything was liable to get out of him. "Assuming that the couriorship is reliable, does it allow for instant communication?" He asked, having noted the distinct lack of such ability on this rock of a planet. No radios, no comns, nothing. Just yelling across the bowl at the top of one's lungs was what some of the locals resorted to it seemed.

"It seems to take the dragons and firelizards about eight seconds to teleport, regardless of distance. They pass through a spatial layer the locals call Between," Tela explains. "It's...not a particularly pleasant experience. Then, of course, you have to find the person you had a message for. So, not instant, no. But faster than most low-tech means."

And fast for transport too, as the dragons could carry passengers.

"Part of the problem is that this world appears to have a relatively metal-poor crust, making traditional technology hard to achieve. The locals do appear to have once had extensive biotechnology, but they have lost the knowledge."

"Eight seconds." Wiruun repeated, clearly storing the knowledge away for later use if necessary. "That is faster than running around, yes." He observed, turning his gaze about the room again before settling it back upon Tela once again. "I am aware that you have one of the larger variety, the dragons. It is logical to assume that you have made this spatial jump yourself. But this is not what I wish to know about. What kind of transition was it for you to have a large carnivorous indigenous reptile at your beck and call? I would imagine there was a learning curve to its training." He observed in the same level, flat, toneless and almost disinterested sounding tone. Even though he was directly asking her for information on the topic, it was impossible to say he was actually curious about it.

Which was rather exactly the whole gist of it. Kirn were not curious. But they gathered intelligence very well. How they managed to pull that off at the same time was anyone's guess but to a Kirn.

Tela nodded. "There is, although bear in mind that dragons are quite intelligent. They are on the very edge of sentience...some may be over it. That, of course, makes them easier to train, although sometimes more prone to ask *why* they should be doing something."

She considered that for a moment. "They are, of course, quite large, and carnivorous, although most only eat once every three or four days or so once they have reached full growth. Most of the learning curve comes in dealing with the fact that they are intensely *curious* creatures, prone to sticking their muzzles in wherever they will fit."

Aleroth was, of course, curled up outside the dragon infirmary. Hearing her partner's thoughts, she sent a mental snort at her, more emotion than words.

Wiruun just stood there and looked at her in dead silence as she talked, displaying what most might have considered to be utmost patience. But in truth he was just waiting. For eventually she might get around to answering the question he'd asked. So far she had yet to tell him anything he hadn't already known, all while managing to skirt completely around the thing to which he had inquired after.

When she stopped talking and still hadn't answered his question, Wiruun just continued to stand there and look at her in complete stillness and silence, almost expectantly. Even though he was really just waiting. After a moment he came to the conclusion that she apparently thought she had answered the question he'd asked.

All she'd done was throw random facts, or perceived facts about the creatures at him, and confirmed that there was indeed a learning curve. Never once had she described the effects of such an acquisition to her own personal psyche. Which really was something he intended to know about. If only so he could possibly better understand why his partner Kirn had broken so devastatingly completely ... and possibly why the Se Shatai had not terminated her for that flaw.

Apparently these beasts caused a massive break from procedure, and he aimed to find out why they were compromising the SOP. It appeared to be crucial information that might well be a necessary bit sometime later down the road.

Tela considered for a few moments longer. "The real issue, though, is the empathic bond. Which is very deep and permanent. Dragons always, invariably, suicide if their rider dies." She glanced towards the infirmary weyr. "From what I have heard if a rider survives their dragon, suicide is not uncommon, although some do manage to come up with ways to remain functional. But they...it is very hard to explain. They fill the holes in people's psyches."

Which would, indeed, explain what had happened to Ruula. That the dragon had *changed* her. "They change people. I have to admit that."

Or perhaps it only explained why Tela had not terminated her as she should have...because she did not want to slay the dragon as well?
