The wherling dens were already full. Not of wherlings, as Lydela would have loved, but with possible Candidates shipped over from Clydek. She certainly didn't mind sharing Lydelask's clutch, but with the sheer number of Clydek offers, she could only hope that a few eggs were granted to Aphelion Candidates. Clydek had offered over thirty Candidates, most individuals who were too old to continue Standing for dragons that never knew they could have the chance to Stand for another bonded. This mentality also made it so that most of the individuals were more than worthy of being granted an egg, even Lydela understood that.

They wanted it. They didn't think of whers as lesser dragons, they thought of them as exactly what they were. A chance to be more than just yourself. Very few young-folk understood this, especially when they believed they still had plenty of time to Impress a much more preferred dragon.

Still, Lydela had doubled them up and thrown them in the wherling barracks. Their own had recently been completed, but living there now would give them a chance to get used to it, to get used to living their lives at night. It was simply the best method to go about storing an extra thirty or so people, all looking to be granted a wher egg. And Lydela knew, that at the rate Analei was going with her dragons, many of these Candidates would be back next turn if they were not given an egg this time around. And likely with more friends.

Lydela sighed and leaned against the wall of the Den Hatching Sands, watching her golden wher as the queen reorganized her eggs once more. They were ready. In fact, they'd been ready a sevenday ago. But it had been Lydela's idea to keep them just a bit longer, just long enough to give them a harder shell and better protection against the cold of Between, since at least some of the eggs would likely make the journey. This cut down on the time the Candidates would spend with their individual eggs, but it was a well made strategic move. Especially with all the Candidates already learning to adjust to the night life of a wherhandler.

"Just say when, love," she said softly to the queen.

Lydelask rumbled. She was, obviously, less pleased with the idea of her eggs making such a journey. Of the thought of never seeing her children. Still, she would not complain. Over the turns Aphelion Candidates had been few and far between, and Varsk had outdone himself in siring this clutch. She needed as many Candidates as possible.

Adjusting the golden Taurus egg once more, she was finally satisfied. But not exactly ready to call the Candidates. She had one call to make first, Varsk she called out to the father of the clutch. Lydela had already explained to Varon that his celestial would be needed for the Standing process, that he was to guard the entrance and keep the Candidates in line. Oddly enough, she felt Varsk was possibly more suited for the position than his father had been. You are needed at the Hatching Entrance, she said softly, though there was an unhappy note about it. Lydelask was simply in a sour mood, and it was likely to affect how the Standing was to go.

Lydela went to the golden wher and gently stroked her head, "They will be going to good Candidates, who will make you proud as wherhandlers," she soothed the queen. Lydelask merely grumbled, then adjusted the Libra Egg before taking her spot in the middle, five eggs to one side, five eggs to the other.

Lydela walked out to the entrance, ready to escort the Candidates in one at a time, her own mood mildly altered by her queen's mood. Still, she stood to await the Candidates.

Once Varsk took his post at the entrance, Lydelask did what she had to do, Candidates who wish to try to take my eggs, come now or lose your chance, she said rather huffily to everybody within the Weyr, dragonriders included. Nobody was going to miss this Standing.

Candidates who wish to try to take my eggs, come now or lose your chance,

Erudan looked up from folding his laundry. Ah-ha. The Standing date had finally arrived. Wonder if she'll have an egg for me this time? he thought idly as he made his way out of the Barracks, walking briskly towards the Wher Dens. The Den Sands would probably be gathering a good line just about now, what with all those Clydek Candidates. Good. There were far too few Aphelion Candidates that were dedicating themselves entirely to a wher, instead of cultivating a secret hope for a dragon. Oy. Dragons. Nice and all, sure, but there was that tricky little flying thing. Also the fact that they couldn't see worth an eggshell in the dark... And, of course, the fact that they were diurnal. Yeah. No dragons for him, thanks much.

No, Erudan was for the whers, and he could only hope that this time, this Standing, there would be an egg for him. Hopes and dreams. This sort of event was about the only time he allowed himself to really latchonto the hope for a wher. Otherwise? It was better to expect failure. Better to just say 'I'd love it if it did happen, but it's nothing I can't live without'. But now? Now, he allowed himself to become a bit enthusiastic. Today was a Standing day, after all. A happy day. Ten people would walk off those Sands with an egg in their hands, no matter what.

He just hoped he'd be one of the lucky few.

The boy arrived at the entrance to the Sands, noting that, surprisingly enough, he was the first one there. Clydekians must not know their way around the Dens too well, he supposed. At the entrance stood the clutchfather, Varsk. He didn't pay too much attention to him - the clutchmother and the Queenhandler were the only ones that really mattered at a Standing. The clutchfathers, he'd found, were just there to give the prospective Candidates an extra look-over, and scare 'em away if they found them lacking. Seeing as he wasn't being scared away, well... The Candidate murmured a respectful greeting to Lydela, and was waved in.

Aaah, wasn't this a familiar little scene? Certainly there were more eggs, but the sight of a brooding mother wher was most definitely something he'd seen before. Well, he knew the drill.

Erudan gave the Queen a deep bow. "An honor to Stand for your clutch, milady," he said in quiet, respectful tones. (Just about the only time he brought out that voice, in fact.) "I only hope I'll be worthy for one of the little ones." And she'd send him out, of course. Just like every other time.

...Right?

Sehanu came running into the male barracks, heedless of the fact she was still in her nightgown. She made her way to Cirthal's bed and shook him awake. Though she was trying to be quiet, more than one of the boys were probably disturbed by her presence after Lydelask's announcement. "Wake up, Cirthal," Sehanu hissed, her eyes bright with excitement. "It's time to Stand!"

Cirthal rolled over, blinking up at her sleepily. He vaguely recalled a voice in his head a few moments ago, but he'd thought it was a dream. Wasn't it rude to wake people up in the middle of the night? These queens were pushy creatures. "Can't you Stand on your own?" he asked grouchily. "Just a few more minutes." Honestly, she'd been the one who wanted to come. He'd only come to make their parents feel better and to see the Weyr records.

Sehanu giggled and yanked his blanket off the cot. "Not me, silly, you!" She went to his bag and started pulling out a clothes and tossing them at him. "Lydelask is the wher queen, remember? i told you about the eggs and you should Stand for one," she explained brightly as Cirthal continued to stare in confusion at her. He was really only half awake and barely realized what she was saying.

"But I never..." he started, but Sehanu was looking at him with such a hopeful expression that he had a hard time finishing the sentence. Sighing, he started to put on the clothes. He really couldn't say 'no' to his little sister when she was trying so hard to help him, even if he didn't think it was helping. He knew she would mope for days if he didn't at least try. Besides, no queen was likely to give him an egg when he was so apathetic about the whole thing.

"Fine," he said, finally ready. "I'll try, but don't get your hopes up. I'm not really a Candidate you know." Sehanu beamed at him and took his arm to drag him down to the Wher Apartments. "I know," she admitted as they went. "But you can't be alone your whole life and I'll be too busy if I Impress myself." She was sincere, almost sad and Cirthal was surprised enough to look a bit sheepish.

"Well, I..." he started, but he wasn't really sure what to say. To be honest, he'd never really thought of it like that before. The time for thinking and talking was now past, however, as they had arrived at the Den Hatching Sands. Several others were already waiting to be allowed entrance, so Sehanu lead her brother to the end of the line. They'd both learned how this worked a few days earlier, though Cirthal hadn't imagined he's actually be doing it.

Then, to his surprise, Sehanu stepped back to stand waiting by one wall. She beamed at him as he stood, looking more uncomfortable and awkward than he had in a long time. "Good luck, big brother," she whispered and winked. Cirthal rolled his eyes, trying to look unconcerned, but he was swallowing dryly in his throat. It had just occurred to him that he would be going inside, alone, with a large, toothy wher ready to defend her eggs. Was that even safe?

It felt like days were passing by as Lydela waited for the Candidates to arrive. Honestly, what was taking them so long? They had gone over the process over and over again. It really shouldn't take them this...oh! There was the first one now! And Lydela simply beamed. He was one of the few Aphelion Candidates, first to arrive and take his chance to Stand. Good for him, and good for Aphelion!

Quickly, she led him in past Varsk, who would see to forcing any others who arrived to wait their proper turn in line. The celestial was certainly a good solid beast, and likely big enough to terrify anyone who tried taking a peek before they were walked into the room themselves. But that wasn't on her mind right now, instead she focused on the Candidate at hand, and led him in to see Lydelask before stepping away so the queen could look at him and only him.

Lydelask, like Lydela, was pleased to see an Aphelion Candidate first. A familiar face, too. He had yet to be given an egg, but he was indeed worthy. She watched as he bowed and said some honorable words that basically led to him wanting one of her pretty eggs. Well, though she didn't usually prefer those who came first - it was best to chase one or two off so the waiting Candidates wouldn't get too hopeful - this one was different. He was Aphelion, and he was certainly worthy. Perhaps his being early proved this?

She nodded her head to them, then regarded her eggs. Which one would she give him? Certainly not her prettiest one, it was not for him. But not something so simple, either. Oh he was deserving of one of her favorites, indeed.

Slowly, she placed a gentle claw on The Libra Egg and pushed it forward towards the Candidate before gently pulling the claw back away from the hardened shell. She then turned her golden head to the Candidate once more and regarded him, watching to see how he would react to such a wonderful gift that she was gracing him with. She tilted her head to one side, wondering if he would rebuke it or accept it. Surely one as worthy as he would make the right choice!

Lydela smiled at the boy, being the first to arrive and the first to recieve an egg! Great day for Aphelion! And it was one of the larger ones too, though it wasn't the golden egg. Something told her that Analei would be happier if the golden egg went to Clydek, but Lydela herself was unsure if she preferred that outcome.

She waited for him to get his egg before escorting him out, giving the few people who had gathered the chance to see the egg that had already been given away. Only nine eggs left. It was going to be a long, long night.

There was a small stream of three Clydekian Candidates who went away empty handed, before the next Aphelion Candidate came to Stand. He was only a vaguely familiar face to Lydela, and it appeared that his sister had dragged him here. The girl, however, did not stand in line, and waited off to the side instead.

Lydela pursed her lips. One of those. The ones that preferred dragons. The girl was still young enough to Stand for the upcoming dragon clutch, so why would she bother with whers?

The queenhandler pulled herself from that mentality. At least the girl had seen fit to bring her brother, who looked young enough himself. Apparently he wasn't destined for the glory she felt herself worthy of. Lydela offered him a bright smile, "Are you ready to see the queen?" she asked him gently. He didn't overly look like he really wanted to be there. But that was of little concern to...well, to anyone.

Erudan watched silently as the great golden wher nodded to him. Huh. Well, this was promising. She wasn't chasing him out immediately, anyway. He watched her like a hawk as she hovered over her eggs. Was she actually considering giving one to him...? His eyes widened in shock as she slowly, gently placed a claw on The Libra Egg, carefully nudging the egg towards him. The large egg was his. His. Finally, an egg! A bonded of his own! The boy seemed almost in a daze as he reached out for the gift (the treasure) she had entrusted him with. Picking up the egg and holding it securely in both hands, he bowed to the Queen once more.

He was going to say something calm and ceremonial-sounding, he really was, but the words that tumbled out of his mouth were anything but. "Thank you, thank you, Faranth above, thank you," he practically stammered. "I--" The boy attempted to regain is composure, straightening up and giving Lydelask an almost painfully sincere look. "I'll care for it with my life. Thank you." He would've added more, but he had no intention of stammering all over the place like a fool again. He stepped back out of the Den Sands, clutching the egg to his chest. His egg. Faranth. He couldn't believe it. Looked like waiting had its merits... A few turns was nothing, if it got him an egg directly from a Queen. It might not be a particularly strong bond, but he was at least guaranteed not to ed up with a wher named Esk. He halfway didn't believe it, but the hard, heavy presence of the egg in his arms kept reminding him that this was real. Gloriously, wonderfully real.

Erudan glanced back at the Queenhandler, a question popping up into his rather scattered brain. "Ah, what den am I supposed to be assigned to, Ma'am...?" He'd have to get this little one to some properly-heated sand as soon as he could...

Cirthal was lost in his own thoughts. He was mulling over what he knew of whers and dragons and how little it actually prepared him for this moment. He knew that dragons Impressed and whers Bonded. A wher bond wasn't always as strong as a Dragon Impression, but it could be. The biggest difference was whers were ground based and nocturnal, while dragons flew during the day. Sehanu would probably take a wher, if it was given to her, he mused, but he couldn't really imagine her spending all her waking hours after sunset. She was just too bright a person.

Lydela's voice interrupted his thoughts and he started back to reality. "I...um...that is..." He glanced back to where Sehanu was smiling encouragement in his direction. Turning back, he tried to look a little more excited about what he was doing, though he probably looked more nervous than anything. "Yes, I suppose I am."

As Lydela showed him inside, Cirthal found himself giving Varsk a wide birth. The Celestial looked big enough to bit him in half! Inside away from the large male, he started to relax for just a second. That is, until he saw the queen. No amount of books or learning could have prepared him for that. She was just so magnificent it was hard to put to words. Not just her beauty, but the frightening power as well.

Be polite, he thought to himself, trying hard not to start. That was the one thing that was repeated to him about Hatchings. Always be polite to the queen. Bowing had been mentioned too, but he wasn't sure he wanted to reveal his neck to her teeth just then. Swallowing hard, Cirthal managed a stiff half bow. "It's...it's an honor, lady queen," he got out without stammering too much. Shards but it would be good to have this over and done. The queen would send him away and he could show Sehanu he wasn't really dragon or wher material after all.

Lydelask didn't let it slide her notice that the first Candidate, whom she had granted a very lovely egg, was referring to dragons during her Standing. Still, she could understand the notion, even if she did have to drag that understanding from Lydela, it was there. So she didn't rear up and remind him that whers were just as great, and that Lydelask was just as great as the golden Faranth. Still, he was worthy, and he had been granted a wonderful egg. She would let him live unscathed, if only to tend to that egg. At least he was holding it properly, as if he treasured it.

For it was a treasure. They were all treasures. Lydelask rolled the Taurus Egg gently one more time, just so that it caught an extra bit of light. She was uneven now, four to one side and five to the other. But that hardly mattered. She was to see them all given away! To see them all cherished as this young Candidate rightfully knew to do to his beloved egg.

Lydela smiled at the boy. At least he knew how to react to being granted an egg. Stunned, thankful, and like he had been given the most beautiful and rare gift anyone could receive. She had certainly felt that way when she had gotten Lydelask's egg. Now he had to play the waiting game, to find out what he held in his hands. To find out just what kind of treasure Lydela had bestowed upon him.

But now he was talking to her. She beamed at him proudly, "We're going to use the East Cluster," since the West Cluster had been recently used. It was wise enough to rotate, especially when she wasn't sure just how many eggs Aphelion would be keeping. "Why don't you take B4, seeing as you've gotten a pretty large egg," she said warmly. It was the largest room in the East Cluster. The golden egg was larger, and maybe one of the others, but with this particular Standing there simply wasn't any certainty that either of those would remain in Aphelion. "You're free to move in whenever. If you need assistance, call on a wherhandler, I'll see to it they give you a hand," she offered politely.

He fumbled over his words a little. Or really, he stammered a bit. Lydela couldn't quite tell if he really was nervous or if he just wanted to be anywhere but here. Still, beyond that notion, he was a likable enough exterior it seemed. Still, she didn't say much, just led him inside where her golden queen could look at him and decide for herself whether or not this boy was worthy.

Lydelask waited as Lydela led in another hopeful Candidate. Though the golden queen was quick to note that this particular one was not so hopeful, at least not at first. Still, he reacted to her almost as if he had never seen a wher before. Which couldn't honestly be the case with Varsk waiting just outside at the entrance, keeping those in line where they ought to be, making them be patient. He was trustworthy, Varsk, and easily dependable. Then again, so too had Naolisk been.

She waited, staring at him with the intense gaze of one deciding worth, which was only made more terrifying by the fact that she was quite so large as she was, even though she was laying down between her egglines at the moment. She watched as he bowed, not all the way but certainly good enough for her, and then talked about it being an honor. Well, that certainly was one way to get into a queen's good graces!

But mostly, he looked as if he really just wanted to leave. She would not be so kind. She watched him silently, without moving, as several minutes passed by. Was he worthy? Or was he not? It was difficult to decide right at the moment. He could be worthy, though he didn't seem to want to be. Did that make him less worthy? Certainly not. It hadn't made the others less worthy in the past. And while hers held a distinctive disliking for Varsk's, Lydelask didn't for a moment regret her decision that they ought to be paired. Varsk's had been worthy and had done well with his egg. So well that the young celestial had sired such a grand clutch.

Indeed, this boy too was worthy. But she had to decide now what egg to grace him with. Certainly not her prettiest. That just wouldn't do. Not to one who couldn't hold his own as this one could not. No, he did deserve something. Just perhaps not something so large. A smaller egg? No, he didn't look like he could handle one of her smallest younglings. She decided upon a medium sized egg. But which one?

At this moment, Lydelask stood. She waited a moment before slowly pacing behind her lines of eggs, glancing from the eggs to Cirthal. Which one? Which one would fit him best? She was determined to see him with an egg now. He was worthy, he could handle it, he would be better with an egg. Not to mention, he was of Aphelion! To think, her first two eggs going to Aphelion when Clydek was trying so hard to take them away from her.

She paused, finally reaching a decision. Leaning down, she used her muzzle to gently nudge The Capricorn Egg forward, making it clear that her decision was made. Cirthal was to take this egg and this egg alone. And all would be well within Aphelion. Once it was nudged forward enough to stand happily before its clutchmates, she raised her head and looked at the Candidate expectantly, waiting for him to come claim his prize as happily as the worthy one before him had.

Raising his head, Cirthal met the queen's eyes almost by accident. He found it nearly impossible to look away. It was as though Lydelask was staring into his very soul and going places even he didn't dare to go. He wonder what she saw in him? Surly she would see he wasn't much good with animals, intelligent or otherwise. He wasn't all that much good at anything except his studying and he just didn't have time to take care of a baby wher at the same time. Her eggs really would be better off with other people, and she would see that. Wouldn't she?

It seemed to take a very long time for the queen to make up her mind. When she stood, Cirthal took an involuntary step back, wondering if he'd somehow offended her. He usually didn't care if he offended people, but most people didn't have such big claws. Yet, she did not move towards him, but to the eggs. Was she seriously considering giving him one?

Cirthal's eyes went to the eggs for the first time. They were much prettier than the dull, white oblong spheres he was expecting. Indeed, each one seem to have its own personality, even just looking at the colors and shapes. He wondered how it was that whers could have such widely varying eggs, but he supposed no one really knew. He was pondering that thought, when Lydelask moved one of the eggs forward and looked at him. Though she said nothing, her meaning was clear even to someone as dense as he.

For a second Cirthal just stared at it, like it was going to hatch out that second and bite him. "Wait...I..." he stammered, shaking his head. He wanted to tell her no, she had the wrong guy. He didn't really want an egg. He was only here for his sister. He couldn't get the words out, suddenly very afraid that Lydelask wouldn't take no for an answer. He was stuck with it, and he knew it.

Hiding back a sigh, Cirthal took a hesitant step forward and brushed The Capricorn Egg egg, gently with his fingers. It was warmer than he'd expected and somehow comforting to touch. Finally, the young man gave another bow, lower this time. "Thank you," he managed, even sincerely. "I...I will do my best to care for it." What else could he say? As much as he wasn't sure he wanted one, he couldn't just leave the thing homeless.

Slowly and carefully, Cirthal cradled the egg in both hands and headed back out of the den.

Well, the Queenhandler seemed pleased, at the very least. She gave him a beaming smile, telling him where he should go. East Cluster, den B4. Alrighty, then. He hadn't been in the Wherling Dens before, per se, but he knew the general area to go. He'd been lurking around this place for turns, after all. It was natural that he'd gain at least a sense of where the lucky few Wherlings went at the end f the day. And it'd be simple enough to figure out the 'East Cluster' and 'B4' bit. There were probably marks on the doors (or beside the doorframes, at least) of the rooms to denote what number they were.

Erudan gave Lydela a respectful nod, and strode off in the direction of his new den. First and foremost, he had to get his egg (His egg. Faranth.) to some good, warm sand. Maybe start up a small fire. Then he could start moving his belongings. Might even finish folding that laundry once he was all moved in. Set some of the few trinkets he had on the desk that was standard to each den. But for now?

Sand. Sand and warmth. That was what he and this egg needed.

He seemed like he was going to refuse for a moment. Lydelask simply stared at him, watchful, waiting for him to make his move. To reject such a wonderful gift? He would have to be a fool. Still, he wouldn't be the first to reject such a treasure, it was simply not what she was preferring at the moment. Especially not with how well the first worthy one had reacted, cherishing the pretty egg she had given to him. This egg wasn't as large as the first one, but it was just as special to a happy mother.

Fortunately, for him, he didn't refuse the egg. While he stepped forward to touch the egg, Lydelask laid back down between her egg lines, watching him a little less ferociously and more curiously. He had touched the egg. There really was no way he could turn it down now, she was sure. Eggs always had a special feel to them, though only the ones she granted them to would ever feel the specific rush of each egg, she still knew it made it far more difficult for anyone to turn away the egg she decided was properly theirs.

Once he touched it, he thanked her, and Lydelask looked particularly smug. He bowed once again, and this time Lydela deemed to return the bow with a graceful lowering of her neck, bowing her head to the young Candidate who had obviously made the correct decision. And had been rewarded for it! He had one of her pretty eggs, which was far more of a treasure than most would ever know.

When the boy picked up his egg and turned to leave, Lydela sidled up next to him with a smile, "Congratulations," she said. She knew he hadn't been the most enthusiastic, but that changed so very little. She noted the egg, of around average size, so not too small a den. "Why don't you take Den B1?" she offered quietly. It was of average size, but was the only room of the whole cluster to have a sands that was unshared. Not that the rooms were shared, but still, surely he would appreciate that. It was also near enough to the first to get an egg while still having plenty of room between them. Room that might be filled with other egg-holders, but she doubted it. Everyone else who was in line seemed to be of Clydek breeding.

"If you need assistance moving your things, just let a wherhandler know, and I'll see to it they give you a hand." She really was good at offering her wherhandlers out to newly egg-granted individuals. But then, she knew what it was like to move from the Candidate Barracks to the Wherling Dens. It was quite a trip.

Cirthal's expression was something between shock, confusion and dread. He blinked at Lydela, as if suddenly remembering who she was. Her kind words were met with a small shrug of acceptance and a mumbled thanks. At least he wouldn't have to carry the heavy egg all the way back to the Barracks, but he wouldn't be able to keep so close an eye on Sehanu anymore. On the other hand, if she was going to keep dragging him awake in the middle of the night, maybe that was a good thing.

He started to walk in the direction Lydela indicated when Sehanu appeared next to him. Her eyes went to the egg with wide eyed wonder and amazement. "You got one!" she whispered in awe. Her hand drifted forward, but she didn't dare touch it. She'd hoped Cirthal would be one of the lucky ones, but she had had doubts whether it would really happen. Maybe now her brother would learn that he didn't have to close himself off so much.

Cirthal, for his part, managed a small smile for his sister. "Yeah, and it's all your fault," he accused quietly. Sehanu grinned wickedly and hugged him around the shoulders. "I'm so happy for you!" Then she turned and started to head back. "Where are you going?" Cirthal demanded. Someone had to show him what to do and she knew more about it than he did. Besides, admitting he didn't know something wasn't very easy.

Sehanu winked at him as she left. "To get your stuff, silly. I'll be right back." Cirthal scowled at her retreating back. "Put some clothes on first!" he called softly after her, only not shouting so he wouldn't disturb the Standing. Honestly, how that girl could run around the Weyr in only her nightgown, he couldn't fathom. Shaking his head, Cirthal hugged his egg tightly and started towards the Wherling Barracks.
