It is currently Mid Winter
Snow has arrived in force. Inside the Weyr walking isn't so bad, but outside in the Plains it is a continuous drift to be plowed through ... or for the more adventurous tunneled through and turned into forts! But with frequent re-applications, it keeps everything so very eerily quiet, if stunningly beautiful. Those hearths sure are inviting right about now ...

The sky darkened on the horizon as the wind sent a harsh chill down the boy's spine. Ornubek shielded his eyes to get a better view of his surroundings. The waves were starting to pick up, causing the small boat to rock violently. Ornubek kept one hand on the tiller and one on the sail with practiced ease. The storm was coming on much faster than he'd expected. He was still within site of Ralen Island, though the port was on the other side. If the wind picked up much more, however, his sail would be torn to shreds.

Cursing his bad luck, the young boy tied off the tiller and jump for his sail. Even dressed as he was, in long pants and a thick sweater from his mother, he could feel the bit of cold in the wind. The first early signs of winter storms. Another gust of wind caught the sail, threatening to overturn the small craft. Ornubek clung to the side as his boat, the Wave Cloud. Water swamped over the side, soaking him to the bone. It was no use, the sail had to come down.

Reaching up with nimble hands, the boy fought to pull the clothe tight. Even as he worked the dark clouds moved closer. It would be a miracle if he could row back before the storm hit. The closer he was to land, the more danger he faced from the rocks that lined the coast in this area. To stay in the open, though, was to be at the mercy of the towering waves. Thinking fast, Ornubek yanked the sail tight and jump for his oars. If he couldn't find a cove to shelter in, he was in for a very rough ride.

The wind was atrocious. The higher up one got, the worse it became. The storm was nothing to sneeze at. A silent conversation took place in which it was decided that it was probably the wise thing to do to go ahead and head home. Before it got so bad as all that.

One last glance around revealed that they weren't the only ones being storm-tossed this evening, however. A small craft, manned by just one person fighting with a whipped sail. It did not look good in the least, to be sure. A split second decision was made, though the idea probably differed more than a bit between rider and dragon. Unfortunately, the dragon was the one with the action, and thus it was the dragon's plan that got executed on the split second's notice.

A flash between, and the dragon reappeared directly over the boat in full spread of wing, washing the wet boat in the chill of between. Darkness deepened upon the boat in the shadow of the dark wings. The boat very nearly swamped between the time of the dragon landing on it, grabbing it, and hauling it back up out of the water, mast, sail, lad, and all, water pouring back off of it in falls.

One massive beat of absolutely massive wings, and the whole world spun on its ear as Intanaith turned for shore.

"That ... wasn't what I had in mind." Rodegnar grumbled, hanging onto the dragon's harness with one hand as he leaned over to look down at the whole entire boat that was being dragged through the air toward the main island. Poor kid. Probably go from having stress over the storm to stress over suddenly being airborne in a boat.

The rush of wind came so suddenly, that Ornubak ducked under the prow of his boat. The cold bit so deep that the boy shivered in his wet clothes and the shadow that came made it seem like night. Instinctively he curled tight and clung to the wood of his boat. It wouldn't do much good, he thought. It must be a twister to come that fast and that powerful. He was doomed, dead before his sixteenth turnday. And to think he'd turned down a quiet life in the mines for this.

A huge weight shoved the Wave Cloud almost completely underwater. Ornubek gasped, struggling to keep his head above water. What kind of twister was this?! He glanced up to see large, yellow shape and then he was flying. Flying! Boats weren't supposed to fly! Ornubek held on for dear life as the churning sea was left far behind. If he wasn't careful, he'd flow right off with the water!

Now he managed a decent look at the thing that had him. It was a dragon. It had to be, but it was so huge. Ornubek had only seen small ones up close, he'd no idea they came in this size. The creature had picked up his boat like it was a toy.

Spluttering out water, the boys face was red with cold and shock, but he still managed to glare up at the dragon. "Shards, shells, and sea snakes!" he shouted hoarsely. "What, in Faranth's name, are yah trying to do? Drown me?!" A part of his mind knew they had just saved his life and they were trying to help, but he wasn't used to having things sneak up and scare him like that.

The person in the boat was unhappy ... which was understandable. Rodegnar still couldn't believe that Intanaith had gone and just picked the boat out of the sea like that. For one thing, apparently the oversized dragon just didn't realize that people could fall out of boats, and that would just defeat the whole purpose of picking up the boat in the first place.

"No, actually. He's just being weird at the moment." Rodegnar called back down, unable to see who he was hearing and talking to for the bulk of Intanaith's chest being in the way. Rodegnar just hoped that Intanaith wasn't going to impale his chest on those masts. That would be a very nasty wound. "Hang on, and don't fall out."

Rodegnar turned his attention to trying to remember where a sheltered cove might be that they could set the boat down without wrecking it. He well knew that people were rather attached to their ships - granted, this wasn't quite the same as it was with him and any of his ships that he'd served on, but it was close enough approximation to still qualify. If nothing else boats were a lot of work to build for these people.

Intanaith seemed to know where he was going, however, huge wings steadily beating as he flew toward the shoreline of the main island. Dropping his head low as he flew, he studied what he could see, and what the bottom of the boat looked like at the same time. Mostly because he was just curious, but also to keep from dropping the boat in water that was too shallow for it.

Soon enough he found a cove that suited what he wanted, and he started the slow and difficult process of backwinging the boat all the way down to the water and setting it down. Well, actually, he more like dropped it into the water for the last yard or so. It made for a terrific splash and quite the jolt, but no real damage was taken. With one more massive back thrust of his wings, Intanaith slid backward in the air and into the water behind the boat. Sinking into the water up to his chest, he paddled forward as his wings furled upon his back. Touching his nose gently to the end of the boat, he pushed it through the water and into a small nook that held it nicely but would protect it from a rising storm tide.

"Are you alright in there?" Rodegnar asked, still wondering at the sanity of his own dragon.

Ornubek could barely hear the voice over with the huge dragon in the way. It must have been the rider. Dragons didn't talk to strangers much, from what he'd been taught. "Don't fall," Ornubek muttered darkly. "I never would have thought of that." At least the dragon seemed to fly fairly steadily. Who knew what would happen when the storm truly hit though.

Ornubek settled himself with his legs under a wooden cross bench. He braced himself with both arms. Instinct told him to shut his eyes, but he refused. He wanted to see where they were going. From the looks of it, they were headed towards shore. Well that was good, but what did the dragon plan? Surly they wouldn't drop him on shore? It was safe sure, but the Wave Cloud would probably be wrecked.

Then he saw the cove. Looked like this dragon and rider had the right idea after all. He'd have to do something to thank them, when he was done being freaked by the whole flying business. They went down fairly slowly, leaving Ornubek to wonder how a dragon this large was going to get him all the way to the water. The question was answered when it suddenly let go. Ornubek gave a startled yelp, but it wasn't far down. A splash and a hard knock and he was settled. Just in time for the first drops of rain coming with the wind.

Ornubek rubbed his chill, wet arms as the dragon pushed his boat further into the cove. He stood shakily, amazed he still had his balance after all that. He was reaching for the rope he used tie his boat to land, when the rider spoke again. "A little warning might have been nice," he pointed out stubbornly. Even so, they had probably saved his life. "Thanks, sir..."

Ornubek stopped and stared at the rider with his mouth open and his eyes wide. His dragon was impressive enough, but now that he could see what was riding it, he was sure he'd knocked his head on the mast. The man, if that's what it was, was far taller than anyone Ornubek had ever seen. Was that armor he was wearing? It was a strange color and were those horns? The boy was starting to doubt if his rescuer was human or not. He'd heard of the Landers, odd people from the Stars who lived on Aphe Island. Was this one of them?

Ornubek liked to see new things, but this was a bit more than he'd been prepared for.

The stare he should have been prepared for. This was not a Weyr person, instead a holder more than likely. Maybe he'd gotten used to everyone in the Weyr knowing about him and who he was ahead of time already ... whatever the case was, he hadn't expected the dumbfounded stare he got from the kid.

Who ... was definitely a kid. Even by Human standards. This one was not adult yet. So ... what in God's name was he doing out on the ocean, in a storm, in a small boat ... by himself? It ... was peculiar, to say the least. Gods have mercy on his soul.

"Warning you was probably something we should have done, yes." Rodegnar agreed amiably. But then, he hadn't planned on Intanaith pulling the whole boat into the air either. If he'd known that ... well ... it wouldn't have happened. "But you're welcome. We can get your boat tied off here at the shore, but I do have to ask ... do you want to stay here with it, or come with us to better shelter? That storm looks a tad rough to ride through." And it was the truth - the first drops were already starting to fall, and they were not being kind about it. It made Rodegnar quite glad that he was not soft-skinned.

I can easily take you to a Hold, or to the Weyr either one. Intanaith offered directly, releasing the boat after it was shoved as far as it would go without being driven into the shore's sands. From here, it would have to be anchored in the traditional manner if the youth didn't want it just outright buried by the dragon.

A few drops of oncoming rain fell into Ornubek's open mouth and he shut it quickly. He wasn't well known for his manners, but he wasn't usually prone to staring like that. Seeing strange armored men from the stars would take getting used to, though. The boy shook himself, trying to clear his head. He squinted at the rider. He was still there so this was definitely happening. Shards, but he'd have a story to tell the folks back home.

"Oh, yes, um..." he stammered, still getting over the shock. The rope hung loose in his hand. Deftly, he started to climb out so he could tie it off around a small rock spire, still watching dragon and rider with wide eyes. The dragon talking to him was another shock. It had to be the dragon, no one else was around. The words just appeared in his head rather than through his ears. Frowning, he cocked his head, as if trying to clear his ears of water.

Taking a deep breath, Ornubek calmed down. The storm was coming and that was the most important fact right now. He could worry about dragons and Landers later. Squaring his shoulders, he gave them a determined look. "I've weathered storms before," he stated boldly. Even so, he was already wet and on his way to catching the shivers if he stayed. Vrannil could always help him come get the Wave Cloud later.

"But thanks," he agreed with a resigned sigh. He hated admitting he needed help, but it had been his poor judgment that put him in this mess. He should just be grateful anyone was here to get him out of it. "Ralen port is home," he started slowly, but his interest was perked. The Weyr was inland on Aphe Island and he'd never been there. True, he wasn't fond of mountains, but this wasn't a dark, crowded mine. It would be grand to see it. Still, Vrannil would probably give him up for lost if he wasn't back by dark and his poor mother would cry her heart out.

"I aught to get back," he admitted sadly. "Afore they worry." But to see more dragons, was that truly wrong? They had all the sky as their ocean and could go farther than any boat. Maybe he could convince the strange man to take him after he saw Vrannil? It might be a bit much to ask, but he couldn't help but hope.

As the lad tied the boat off, and it was no longer in danger of being sucked back out to sea anymore, Intanaith walked up out of the ocean himself. Seawater rained off of his oiled sides in sheets as he went until he merely dripped here and there upon the beach where he stopped.

"I am sure you have weathered them before, but I doubt you did it in a craft that small." Rodegnar pointed out. He didn't know much of anything about water craft at all, but he did have a pretty good handle on physics. For a short time he was silent, before turning in his seat to look back out over the water toward the storm. "I hate to say this, but we're not going to Ralen. The storm is already pounding that island, it looks like." He turned his night-blue gaze upon the lad again. "I would never ask Intan to try and fly in a gale like that."

I can take you to Aphe hold. Intanaith offered.

"Scratch that. You'd probably have a hard time finding your boat again with another boat. Walking the shore would take even longer. We're not exactly close to the port. We'd have to go get you again and bring you back to your boat. Considering that, we might as well take you back with us to the Weyr. Save a few random legs of travel." Rodegnar suggested.

Or that. Intanaith agreed, dropping his head to eye the lad with one giant eye. Are you afraid of heights?

"I can send a message to your home port, let them know you're in no danger." Rodegnar offered. "But we really should be getting out of here before the wind gets so bad Intan can't get airborne." As he spoke, the Solar shifted his stance to create a ramp with his front leg. Rodegnar leaned down to offer a hand up, but even that way, there was no way Rodegnar was reaching anywhere near the level of Ornubek on the ground. "Watch your step. He's oiled and wet."

Ornubek didn't like people telling him he couldn't handle things, but even he had to admit the rider was right. It would be foolish to whether a storm in the Wave Cloud. She was just too small. Whatever happened, he was bound for a dragon ride, and he couldn't say the prospect didn't leave him giddy. Wasn't it the dream of half the young people he'd met?

Frowning, Ornubek listened to the man's (was that the right term?) thoughts. He seemed a logical person and what he said made sense. The boy's eyes widened at the realization of where they were. He hadn't known he'd drifted so far. Vrannil really was going to have his hide when he got back. At least they didn't seem like it would be until the storm passed. Ornubek certainly didn't want to put his rescuers to more trouble on his account. Bad enough he had to get help at all. Where was the harm in a little trip to the weyr anyway? As long as his family knew he wasn't dead.

Finally, he nodded, barely hiding a smile. He had to raise his voice because the wind was really picking up now. "When you put it that way, how can I say no? So long as my folks know I ain't dead."

Climbing a wet, slippery dragon was nothing like climbing a mast. Ornubek slid down the first time before making it far because he hadn't really expected the hide to be that smooth. Scowling at himself, he tried again. This time he made it far enough to grasp the rider's hand. He almost let go in surprise, having forgotten the armor like skin, but instincts made him hold on. They didn't have time to waste because he was nervous.

"Indeed." Rodegnar answered, watching as the youth tried and failed to climb Intanaith's foreleg. He did not criticize him, not even in thought. Mountain a dragon like Intanaith was a trick even when dry. That the youth made it on his second try impressed him significantly. The kid knew his footing on slick surfaces, that was for sure. "Careful." He cautioned, even still.

When Ornubek was close enough to reach, Rodegnar grabbed a hold of his hand, careeful to not stab the young human with his claws - even if they were already blunted off for expressly that reason. He felt it when the youth almost let go, but he did not let go. Hauling him up almost effortlessly, Rodegnar set him on Intanaith's neck ahead of himself. "I don't have a safety rig for you. Just hang on to that ridge in front of you, and I'll make sure you don't fall."

Intanaith eyed the oncoming storm as they did all that, getting a little concerned about the wind himself. But he was patient, and once he felt everything settled as well as it could get, he lifted his wings at half furl. More, and he would be thrown about by the wind long before he ever achieved flight. He crouched, and then sprang into the air facing into the oncoming wind. A few strong beast for altitude came before he winked between to reappear over the Weyrbowl. There, the storm's winds were not quite so bad, but still a significany obstacle where they were swirling in invisible vortexes around the stone. Carefully, he navigated his way through the currents to make a safe landing on the floor of the Bowl.

Ornubek winced slightly, still a little bothered by the feel of the hand that had him. It wasn't like a leather glove, more like rock or scales, he wasn't really sure which. Were those claws? Good think this person was careful or they'd have more than rain to deal with. The rider was definitely as strong as he was big, lifting Ornubek easily up in front of him like that.

Breathless from the climb, Ornubek only nodded at the instruction. He reached out to cling to the dragon's spine for all his was worth. He had no idea what to expect from a dragon ride, except that he hoped it wouldn't be like flying in a boat! At least this dragon was huge, he was bound to be a steady flyer. A smaller one would be caught in the wind like a ship's sail.

Then at once, they were away! Ornubek had to close his eyes at the rush of wind that came with take off. The weather was really coming down hard. The boy wasn't sure how long even this dragon could keep it up and then, quite suddenly, the wind was gone. It hadn't died, it was just gone. A horrible deep cold like he'd felt when the dragon first appear came on, and he opened his eyes to blackness. It gave him a sick feeling in his stomach, but it only lasted a few seconds.

Now they were much farther inland and away from the wind and the worst of the storm. Ornubek blinked in surprise. He gave a long whistle of appreciate as the dragon settled down. "Now that's a way to travel!" he stated in amazement. Shards, if he could do that, think of all the places he'd see! The Southern Continent, the Northern Mountains, even the Inland Sea!

Rodegnar laughed, the sound rumbling forth like thunder. "Isn't it?" He agreed. After Intanaith settled to the ground as low as he could get, Rodegnar offered Ornubek a hand down again. After he was down and on his own two feet again, Rodegnar unclipped his ties from his gurnet-leather belt and hopped down himself, landing lightly despite his size and weight. After the start of the rain like that, and then a dousing in the chill of between, Rodegnar considered that maybe he ought to find some way of fashioning some sort of jacket. Plain old wind chill didn't bother him any, but getting wet and then frozen? Yeah, that bothered him a bit.

And he knew that if he felt cold, the kid was probably freezing to death. Especially since he'd been soaked in the ocean first, to boot. "Come on. Let's get you dried off before you catch the flue or something." He suggested, gesturing toward one of the lower caverns openings before starting in that direction himself.

Behind them, Intanaith took off again, intent upon getting back to his weyr before the wind in the bowl got worse. Landing on his ledge, he quickly disappeared inside to curl up around Casiluth and wait out the storm by harassing his clutch-sister unmercifully.

"When the storm passes, we'll get you home again." Rodegnar mentioned, remembering that he still had to find Perabola and send her to the Hold. Being nice and small (unlike Intan), she could snap into the safety of indoors to deliver the message, despite the storm raging over that Hold.

The thrill of flight was past, and Ornubek was quickly remembering how wet and cold he was. Never mind, cold was an understatement. He was freezing! It felt like the deep winter, not late fall. Shivering and trying not let his teeth chatter, the boy hugged his arms tightly. A hot bath, fresh clothes, and soup were what he wanted right now. Even so, he hated asking for charity. Maybe once he was dry, he'd offer to help out until he headed home.

Reluctantly, but remembering how hard it was the first time, Ornubek took the offered hand and slid down the dragon's leg to the ground. At least going down was a heck of a lot easier than going up. He landed firmly, if a little shakily on his feet. The wind was picking up even hear. Looked like this storm was big enough to hit the entire island.

Being on the ground again made Ornubek realize how tired he was too. Too tired to offer he usual protests that he could take care of himself. Besides, if he tried, he'd just get lost. This place was huge! Several times larger than Ralen, much less his little cot hold. Deftly, he followed the strange rider inside. "Thanks," he managed again. He really should do something proper to show his gratitude later. "Really. I'd be snake bait if you hadn't come." For all his bravado, he knew now that it was true. He'd been a fool to go out so far on his own. It was a mistake he wasn't likely to repeat.

Rodegnar glanced at the lad, but didn't say anything immediately. This one was a small contradiction onto himself ... or at least was wise enough to know when to stow his pride in his own self interest. The former was surprisingly common in Humans, but the later was a very rare trait in youths of any species. It left him a little bit to speculate as he led the lad toward the lower spaces of the Weyr. There, Rodegnar too easily got the attention of one of the people who worked there (he absolutely refused to call them drudges), and requested the desired items from them. They knew where they were kept, anyway, where as Rodegnar didn't. Mostly because he never had any sort of use for any of it.

In very short order, clothes, towels, and a jacket were procured to the lad, and Rodegnar thanked the person before leading Ornubek onward. It was not very far before he found a suitable spot, aware of the usual aversion to showing one's skin that most (but not all) Humans had. "You can change in there." Rodegnar told him. "When you're done, I'll take you to the kitchens."

"Snake bait? I suppose you're referring to the seaserpent, then. Possibly. Though I doubt the creature was any where near the surface of the ocean with a storm incoming. Water feels the turbulence too, after all. I do agree that you probably weren't going to survive the experience. But never you mind it, we were glad to help - even if he did have a very odd method of providing it." Rodegnar told him, with a small nod. The smile he kept under wraps, remembering that this particular human was not used to him yet, and a mouthful of sharp teeth would probably not go over very well.

Ornubek grinned, taking the pile of clothes and towels gratefully. This person was pretty polite, he wondered if all the Landers were like him. Maybe while he was here, he'd have time to meet more. Generally he didn't really care about undressing unless girls were about, but he ducked out of sight anyway. To be dry and in warm clothes felt heavenly.

"Suppose that's true," the boy admitted thoughtfully as he changed. He'd never met the snake personally, or even seen it, thank Faranth. It was hard to say what its habits were. He reappeared, laden with wet towels and clothes. He'd have to get his cleaned and dried before he left. He grinned again. "Folks back home'll never believe me," he agreed. "But thanks, mister..." He paused with a small frown. "Don't think I got your name. Mine's Ornubek." He thought about trying to shake the other's hand, but decided against. Partly, because his hands were full, and partly because he still wasn't sure about the claws.
