NOBLE HOUSE: Caran

Magic Class: Black Priest

PLACE OF RESIDENCE: Sky Castle, The Vale

OCCUPATION: Lady of House Caran

APPEARANCE

HAIR COLOR: Black
EYE COLOR: Blue
SKIN TONE: Pale

APPEARANCE: Mathilda looks like she hasn't aged in years and there's a good reason for that - Kabal's protection of her and her own vanity. Her skin is as smooth and spotless as it was when she first married. Her is hair thick, straight, shiny and worn loose much of the time. Her blue eyes are bright with intelligence and just a hint of her underlying insanity.

GENERAL CLOTHING: Mathilda is well aware of her station in life and wears the gowns to prove it. Her heavy dresses and furs keep her warm from Sky Castle's chill and the intricate detailing and expensive materials showcase her status as Lady of the Vale. He prefers muted or dark colours and, since being touched by Kabal, has actually commissioned her own set of stylised armour, which she has never worn but thinks someday she must.

SCARS OR MARKINGS: She heals all her scars but the one she can't heal is the one from Kabal, a ragged scar on her forearm reminiscent of his two greatswords, crossed over each other.

PSYCHOLOGICAL

LIKES:
+ Her children
+ Magic
+ The cold

DISLIKES:
- Her husband
- Monasteries

PERSONALITY: Mathilda is a consistent and cautious woman, used to hiding her true nature as a woman born into a man's world and as a Black Priest. She does not to things on impulse, preferring to plan her strikes with precision and, preferably, in secret so she does not have to do it again. She is efficient and organised, a trait that has served her well in governing the Vale since her husband's unfortunate and ongoing illness.

Solitary and reserved, she comes off as a cold person who does not make friends (at all). Mathilda has become suspicious since being touched by Kabal, convinced of plots where they are none and her advisers no longer receiving the trust they used to. She revels in her time alone and will often go days without seeing anyone but her children and the silent maids.

Despite her growing insanity, she is secure and confident. She does not particularly feel anger, anxiety or vulnerability. She has the emotional capacity of a rock, except for when it comes to her children. All her love and caring goes into them and many would be surprised to see such compassion from a woman usually so cold.

BACKGROUND

Father: (Deceased)
Mother: (Deceased)
Husband: Lord ___ Caran (incapacitated)
Siblings: Brothers and/or sisters welcome
Children: Three children, oldest is a son who is 15. The middle child is not Lord Caran's but has shown signs of being a priest. The youngest child is a seer and blind, cursed through the Caran line.

History: Married to the much-older Lord Caran when she was presented at court, Mathilda has always hated her marriage. Born into a lesser noble house in The Vale, the discovery of her magic did not stop her parents from pulling her from her studies to do her duty as a noblewoman.

The Vale is a harsh world almost constantly covered in snow and Mathilda has never known an easy life, even with her higher social standing. Her magic was a further harshness as it meant strict study in a monastery. She was an arrogant child, though, with more raw power than many of her fellow students but less control. She chafed under the rules imposed on her and would have been glad to leave her studies if it weren't for the reason why.

At 15, Mathilda was a beautiful child, a woman just flowered with black hair and blue eyes set into blemishless milky skin. Her marriage to Lord Caran was swift and the only good to come from it were her children and her meeting with a Black Priest.

The Black Priest saw the power within her and his careful inquiries at her monastery found all he needed to know about her personality and her susceptibility to the darker arts. Over a year, slowly, the Black Priest turned her away from her teachings and her slow descent into becoming a Black Priest begun.

Lord Caran needed an heir, though, and at 17 she gave birth to her first child. She adored him as soon as she set eyes on him but Lord Caran was not happy with just one child. He had to have more, just in case. Mathilda's second child was not of Caran blood. Her bond with her teacher was strong, dependent, and he had taken her despite her marriage and station. The product of two priests, her second child exhibited signs of being a priest at just three, healing a cut on their brother instinctively. Mathilda has kept her child's powers a secret, unwilling to give them up to the monastery and taking it upon herself to teach them how to control their power. Her final child, the last before Lord Caran mysteriously fell ill, was of Caran blood, born blind but with the gift of seeing.

The Black Priest died years ago, soon after the birth of her second child, but by then Mathilda was trained as a Black Priest and used her magic to keep her husband's sickness from healing. No one knew what this illness was except that breathing was difficult and movement barely more than the ability to swallow. By this time, Mathilda was teetering on the edge of insanity, convinced she was doing the right thing for her children by disallowing her husband to send her gifted ones to teachers or her eldest to be fostered somewhere else.

It was during one of her dreamless recoveries from using her magic on her husband when Kabal came to her. He saw her potential to wreck havoc across the domain, saw how easily twisted her fragile mind was, and marked her with his brand. Her mind cracked under the pressure and when she awoke all she saw was corruption, betrayal and ineptitude. Word of the Four Hoards reached her and suddenly she understood what her purpose was - to cleanse Cyriol. She must allow the Four Hoards through the borders to raze the cities, kill the corrupt leaders and from the ashes would rise a new Cyriol, a better Cyriol, led by her son.

WEAPON(S)
