Alright so, last year I made a thread for EVO 2011 so I figured I should make one for this year. After all, I love to make topics that nobody posts in!

WHAT IS EVO?
QUOTE
The EVO Championship Series represents the largest and longest-running fighting game tournaments in the world. EVO events bring together the best of the best from around the world in a dazzling exhibition of skill and fun, as players and fans gather to honor the competitive spirit in an open format and determine a champion.

You'll also find that our tournaments are about more than just winning. EVO events are open to anyone, feature many stations available for relaxed free play, and offer unique opportunities to meet people from different countries and different walks of life who share your passion. Established champions face off against unknown newcomers, and new rivals that might have only talked or fought online meet up and become old friends.

THE GAMES
These are the 6 main titles that the EVO staff decided to hold official tournaments for:
 • Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition ver. 2012
 • Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3
 • Mortal Kombat 9
 • King of Fighters XIII
 • Soul Calibur V
 • Street Fighter X Tekken

It should be noted that Street Fighter X Tekken will be played in 2v2 format. Due to community backlash, this game will not have any time on stream until Sunday for the Finals scheduled really early in the morning when everyone is asleep. Yay! Capcom really fucked up royally with this one and it amuses me immensely. DD.gif

You might ask "Where's Skullgirls? or "What about this game?" Well, when the folks behind EVO picked out and announced the games for EVO 2012, Skullgirls wasn't out yet and they weren't sure when it will be out. What it came down to was, they wanted to give the players enough time to practice their game as well as give players everywhere a lot of opportunities to obtain seeding points at Road to EVO events. Not to mention, the schedule is crammed with enough games as it is which is why they gave Street Fighter X Tekken the short end of the stick.

However, Reverge Labs and Autumn Games will be holding an official side-tournament at EVO with $1000 in the prize pool. Tournament replays will be made available at a later date. Like Skullgirls, Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown will also have an official side tournament and Sega is putting $15,000 in the pot. Not too shabby. You can find the details about it here. These side tournaments will most likely not be shown on the official EVO streams.

As a side note, don't ever piss off any Virtua Fighter fans by saying something bad about it in a Sonic the Fighters review. I'm not really a Virtua Fighter guy but I respect it a lot for being an honest fighting game and having a robust training mode that actually teaches you how to play by breaking down all of the system mechanics. It's incredibly deep for a game with only 3 buttons but I think the problem for most people is that it looks boring. There aren't any over the top, laughably racist, and recognizable character designs and no one can chuck flashy projectiles made of plasma.

If you're interested in the OG sonicchronicles.png, there will also be a special tournament held for Super Street Fighter II Turbo that goes by the name "ST Revival - Tournament of Legends" with invited players such as Daigo Umehara, Alex Valle, John Choi, Jason Cole participating.

THE STREAMS
Unlike previous years, EVO will be streamed via Twitch.TV. EVO partnered with Twitch to create something unique just for the event... Check it out: http://evo2012.s3.amazonaws.com/live/index.html

There will be 3 streams provided by IPlayWinner and the Kings of Poverty, Team Spooky. You can find the schedule for all 3 streams at the bottom of their stream page. Briefly I'll mention the stuff to look out for... SSF4AE ver. 2012 will be on the main channel for most of Day 1. There will also being a PlayStation All-Stars panel where they will reveal characters. Mahvel will be on the main channel for all of day 2. The third stream will be for other panels that they'll have including one on day 2 with a bunch of Indie Game Devs of indie games that are not necessarily fighting game related.

On the final day (Sunday), all finals for all games will be streamed on the main channel. If you don't have time to watch pools then try to at least watch the finals for the two biggest games.

It's free to watch at standard def, 480p and down. If you'd like HD, you have to subscribe. It's $12.00 and all the proceeds go to EVO's newly announced scholarship program for aspiring game developers in computer science and other fields.

Here are all the perks you get for being a nice guy:

 • No ads
 • 720p quality streams
 • Access to chat
 • Custom Emoticons

FAQ
Q: Why do I need to be a subscriber to chat?
A: Fighting game stream chats are notorious for being raw and spammy. It's honestly a very smart decision on EVO's part considering it'll limit the stream to the good guys that are willing to put up money for the community since this event will attract new viewers and you don't want them to be scared away by stream monsters who spam horrible and unfunny things.

Q: Hey, I hear the commentators say all kinds of phrases that I don't understand. What do they mean?
A: The Fighting Game Community (FGC) is almost like a secret club with practically their own language. You can find most words and their definitions on IPlayWinner's Glossary. It doesn't have nicknames for specific character moves like Fei Long's chicken wing but it covers the more common phrases you might hear like "option select" or "mortons". I will say, "stay free" means something along the lines of "stay free to beat, so it's easy for me". It's usually meant to be derogatory.

Q: Who are the notable players and which matches should I look out for?
A: There's just way too many to list. I'd look out for Daigo, Justin Wong, Gamerbee, Poongko, Fuudo, Dieminion, Ricky Ortiz, IFC Yipes, Kazunoko, Kindevu, Eita, Sako, Mago, Momochi, Filipino Champ, Combofiend, Mike "The People's Champ" Ross, Fanatiq, Chris G, Tokido, Wolfkrone, and Latif for either Street Fighter or Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Bala, Romance, and Mr. KoF for King of Fighters XIII... AND MANY MORE! If you're really interested, you can find a bigger list of players for each game at EVO on NeoGAF's thread.

Q: What's eSports?
A: Let's not get into semantics but it's basically "a bunch of dudes playing video games for money." It's not a thing just yet, but it's slowly getting there especially considering how League of Legends became way more popular than StarCraft II. The FGC prefers not to be associated with what's considered eSports with big name sponsors for players and tournaments because it's always been a grassroots community since its conception. That and people are resistant to new words and think the word sounds stupid. "Video games aren't a sport." Call it whatever you want, competitive gaming, pro gaming, for competitive gamers, cyber athletes, pro gamers. It's all the same thing. Don't get me wrong though, cyber athletes is the dumbest thing I've ever heard and I would be embarrassed to be called that.

Q: I don't really care about other people playing video games well let alone fighting games. Why should I watch?
A: Well, so be it. No one can force you to watch EVO if it doesn't suit you but I'll try to at least convince you to take some time away to check it out by putting a bunch of work into making this thread and presenting EVO. Personally, I've been watching EVO since '09 when Street Fighter IV first came out after I saw the infamous EVO Moment #37. I love the hype. I love the down to earth people within the community. Most importantly, I love the games. I grew up playing Street Fighter II on the SNES. Doing a fireball will forever be ingrained in my brain thanks to my older brother showing me how to do it. So, fighting games are just a big part of my life even though I'm not really that good at them. There's also something about just watching two people duke it out in a fast-paced and reaction based game in a battle of wits akin to chess. EVO is the biggest fighting game tournament of the world where all the best to the average Joe from around the globe compete. A lot of people consider E3 the mecca of gaming but I want to say, at least after this year's E3, EVO has it topped. If you love gaming, you owe it to yourself to at least see what all the fuss is about.

I'm okay with EVO. I guess I like the idea of it, but I can't take fighting games more seriously than personal grudge matches between my best friend and I. I guess its the same way they see tournament Smash players. *shrug*

I do like the cool highlights from it. :V

I'm sort of in the same boat... ? I would like to have some friends to spar against. However, my real life circle of friends would rather play other games like League of Legends. I really enjoy playing and watching Mahvel 3 and I would like to play it at a decent level to get more out of it but I can't say the same for my friends. I like to be challenged and it's honestly not fun to sandbag. I'd try to bring them up to my level by giving them tips like block more or brief them on what my character does and plan was so they can prepare themselves next time but I'm not going to force them to play a game they don't have time for or even care about. However, I don't want to go out of my way and spend money to play against strangers and I'm not really too keen about playing online. Playing online is a different ball game with lag, input leniency, rage mail, and anything goes. I'd rather just sit in training mode and practice doing combos.

Regardless, you don't need to be a hardcore player to watch. Spectating pros is just as entertaining for me, at least.

Apparently the archives are for subscribers only which really sucks because I'm not a subscriber. $12 is a little steep but it goes back 100% to funding people in their education. Oh, the HD feed, being able to chat, and emoticons are nice perks too I guess!

I watched it live but hopefully someone will upload it to YouTube because it was hilarious. Kayin, the guy behind the game went in Floe's game and was trolling him while he gave tips every now and then to keep him moving along since they had to close up shop eventually so everyone can sleep and actually play in the tournament today.

Floe is so damn terrible at video games. He had to skip some parts but in the end, he managed to finish the game with 43 seconds to spare.

I was checking the Evo2k12 thread on NeoGAF and was wondering why there wasn't any listed stream-times for SFxT. Guess it's because nobody likes it!

Also, this stream is pretty dang slick. Guess I'll just keep this up all day every day.

That's pretty much exactly why. Everyone hates SFxT except Gootecks.

Edit: Currently there's a black dude, who's name is blackskillz, playing against a girl. The black dude is playing Deejay and the girl is playing Chun-Li... AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH people.

Edit 2: Another black dude is up and he's also playing Deejay.

Yeah, well since this didn't work out, it's back to watching EVO!

Who would've guessed Dieminion would be in Top 8?

THE AMERICAN HOPE

The Top 8 for AE consists of 2 Americans, 2 Koreans, 1 Japanese, 1 Taiwanese, and 2 Chinese

Here are the matches:
Winners Bracket:
 • Infiltration vs Daigo
 • Humanbomb vs PR Rog
Loser's Bracket:
 • Xiao Hai vs Poongko
 • Dieminion vs Gamerbee
Poongko and Daigo are the only ones who made it that were in top 8 at last year's EVO.

As much as I'd love for Dieminion to win, Gamerbee has made him look free at previous events. Guile vs. Adon is just too hard for Guile. It doesn't help that he was sent to losers by Infiltration 2-0 who used Gouken.

Japanese tech for Marvel was leaked.

Basically how it works is, during the super flash, you hold down the tag button and input the motion for a snapback. Your character then does a magic disappearing act until the super is over.

I don't see much application for it. It might be useful in some situations but not all. I doubt you'll be able to do this in the middle of getting combo'd to death. Not to mention, it's dangerous for incoming characters after a death as it is. The only situation I really see is if someone throws out a raw super to chip.Seems to not work on grabs that aren't MODOK's or Nemesis's. Did a little testing in the lab and I got piledrived the fuck out of me.

Marvel pools should be starting in about 30~ minutes.

The producer, Niitsuma, mentioned at the Capcom panel that they currently have no plans to do any more patches or content for UMvC3. So people are pretty much playing the game for what it is, TAC infinites (which isn't a big deal considering it's impractical to set up and everything is 1 touch kill anyway), X-Factor Capcom_logo.png, never changing cast of characters, and all. The panel was all kinds of silly because when he was asked why Hsien-Ko's air dash sucks so much balls he answered that it's how it is in Darkstalkers... which it's not. When he was asked why Spider-Man's assists suck, he told the guy that he should get better at Spider-Man and that they intended to balance good characters by making them have terrible assists. Ahah.

Iron-Man has the best beam assist so I guess that explains why he's garbage on point.

Marvel Top 8:
Winners:
Combofiend (She Hulk, Spencer, Taskmaster, Nova, Hawkeye)
FChamp (Magneto, Doom, Dormammu, Phoenix)
Flocker (Zero, Vergil, Hawkeye, Strider)
Infrit (Nova, Spencer, Sentinel)

Losers:
ChrisG (Morrigan, Doom, Akuma)
Justin Wong (Wolverine, Storm, Akuma)
Frutsy (MODOK, Captain America, Taskmaster)*
Y2J (Wolverine, Spencer, Magneto)

*This guy hails from Mexico and his team is very out of left field. No top tiers. He took out some of the best to get qualify in losers. This is someone to look out for if you're interested in wildcards.

I posted on twitter my predictions for Top 8 for Marvel last Thursday.
QUOTE
My top 8 for Marvel: Jwong, Fchamp, Yipes, Combo, ChrisG, MarlinPie, Fanatiq, and a Japanese player. Zak Benett's in Combo's pool

And I only got 4 of them right. I'm 50% of a prophet I suppose.

Tune in tomorrow for Finals Day.

I ordered a pizza and set it to get picked up at 7 (a little over half an hour from now) cause I didn't want to pay for the delivery fee but then I realized that my dad took the car out...

So I have to leave in about 15 minutes early to pick it up because I'll be walking to Papa John's.

KOF is on right now, which is hype and all but I want to have pizza for MAHVEL

Yeah, I agree. The game is good but KoF is not really popular in America. It's popular every where else, especially Mexico.

Only problem I see with it is that it takes too damn long. I went to go out and get my Pizza and came back and I missed literally one match.

I'm honestly rooting for Bala, I was disappointed he lost the set but it seems Mad KOF wants more, so he asked to reset the bracket.

edit: And Bala completely bombed it. Hahaha. Oh well. UMvC is up next if I understand the chart correctly.

I really wanted Bala to win T_T

Mad KoF's Duo Lon and Chin were too damn much for Bala. When Bala picked Clark I thought Mad KoF was mindfucked and I got so hype but then he lost that one. I think had he picked Benimaru sooner, it would've been a lot closer.

Marvel is up next.

I was rooting for Bala too, but I'm happy for Mad KoF. I hear CafeID is a small group that really had to save to get their whole crew out there, so I'm kind of glad that one of them won it.

I'm bummed that I missed SCV and MK9, though. I could take or leave SFxT, but I probably still would have enjoyed the finals if my computer wasn't being Capcom_logo.png.

Did I miss the finals for Skullgirls too, or did they not show it?

I assume they showed it in between two of the games because right now they're showing Tekken Tag 2 off between KoF and Marvel and Virtua Fighter was before KoF but after MK9. It's a thing they're doing as sort of a break in between games.

That was the craziest thing! I'm surprised that Justin was even in the losers bracket. Anything can happen at EVO, man. It's exciting.

CHRIS G IS BRINGING IT.

Also, I'm sad Fchamp beat Combo %28%28.gif

Combo against Frutsy the MODOK player is going to be interesting.

Combo beat Frutsy, so maybe he'll get his rematch. I was pulling for Frutsy, though. I love it when people specialize in a character very few people play. I liked Mame Spider early on, too.

I really wanted Frutsy to win. I love Combo but I gotta go for somebody representin' MODOK. It was some good matches though. That first one was insane.

I'm almost positive Chris G was trying to do the Kubota Escape that I linked earlier. You just raw tag if you fuck it up.

Doesn't look like that's going to happen, though. FChamp is on his game right now.

Looks like FChamp is gonna reset the bracket and win out. I was really hoping FChamp would lose, too. Hahaha...
